No general consensus
There is no general consensus relating to
the U.S. dollar sign origin. According to one version, S (capital of
the word Spain) was a sign put by the Spanish on the gold bars molten
from the American colonies precious metal. After coming to Spain, the S
was crossed out with a vertical line. When the consignments of gold bars
were ready to be shipped to the colonies, the sign was crossed out with
one more line.
